The Institute for Justice is litigating to open up the public streets to private van services-something that will help alleviate the transportation woes of New York City minorities. However, the public bus union is working to block that reform by claiming, erroneously, that private vans are not safe. Here are some facts about New York City’s public buses:
From 1984-1994, New York City buses averaged more than 6,000 collisions per year.
In one year (1993), 318 drivers accounted for 1,616 accidents.
One driver alone had 51 accidents in 17 years before he received additional training. He was not terminated.
Reported injuries on the buses averaged 2,000 each year from 1984-1995, with 66 fatalities.
