James King was an innocent Michigan college student when he was mistaken for a petty thief and beaten and choked to within an inch of his life by plainclothes state and federal law enforcement agents. When they realized their mistake, the officers doubled down, charging James with felonies for “resisting arrest” and trying to defend himself from what he thought was a mugging. Fighting to clear his name bankrupted James’ family. A jury acquitted him of all charges, but when James sued the officers for violating his rights, the government argued he had no legal avenue to hold them accountable.
So, James has partnered with the Institute for Justice to take his case to the U.S. Supreme Court and make sure that government officials can be held accountable when they violate the Constitution.
