Jorge Portillo

Senior Research Analyst

Jorge Portillo is a Senior Research Analyst at the Institute for Justice, where he conducts data-driven research to advance the Institute’s strategic research agenda. He has over twenty years of experience in private practice, public service, and teaching, and has published research work on pension reform, legal aid programs, subsidized health insurance, oil industry dynamics, and political economy.

Prior to joining IJ, Jorge worked as a Senior Economist at Economists Incorporated, a Researcher and Research Manager at the Central Bank of Venezuela, and a lecturer at various universities in the US and abroad.

Jorge earned a B.S. in economics from the University of the Andes and a Ph.D. in economics from Yale University. At home, he is a man who, for his own amusement, never takes up any book but Jane Austen’s; there he finds occupation for an idle hour, and consolation in a distressed one.
