Heather Coffy sent her three kids to private school because she knew that they would get the attention they needed to succeed and that participating in Indiana’s scholarship program (the largest in the nation) would make it affordable. Her oldest son previously attended public school, but he transferred to a private school where class sizes are smaller and students can get one-on-one instruction. When the program was under attack by the teachers’ unions in 2011, Heather teamed up with IJ to save the program. She wanted all parents in Indiana to have the opportunity to choose the best school for their children. In 2012, Heather and IJ took the fight to the Indiana Supreme Court, which ruled unanimously that the state’s Choice Scholarship Program did not violate the Indiana Constitution. This landmark ruling gave Heather and other parents—not the government—control over where kids go to school.
